THE THREE PARTS OF THE PSYCHE

According to 19th-century psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud, the human psyche, or conception of the “self,” is made up of three elements.

Id. A person’s instinctive impulses, such as the desires for food, sex, and to strike out violently at others when threatened.

Superego. The system of censors and personal restraints, such as morals, that have been deeply embedded in the brain since childhood.

Ego. The part of the psyche that experiences and reacts to the outside world. It acts as a middleman between the primal urges of the id and the social constructs of the superego.
